Once upon a time in a land down under...
"...we set out to create the world's best pepper mill when we noticed a great big unsolved design problem.
One-handed pepper mills are super convenient (especially if you've got a messy hand from cooking) but they are hard work and because of their limited motion they have limited output. Two handed mills normally have a larger output, and can be easier to use because they engage larger muscle groups, but the common grip-and-twist action is just as painful as one-handed mill. You end up with a dead arm in no time. Not to mention when you season a steak, then pick it up and flip it over to do the other side, you end up with a dirty two-handed mill.
So we challenged ourselves to create a pepper mill that combines the convenience of one-handed grinding, with the extra speed, ease and output of two.
Our main objective was for optimum one and two-handed use, but we also wanted our mill to be easily filled, easily cleaned and not make a mess, all while looking beautiful. So we used an easy to fill wide-mouth jar made from durable borosilicate glass to hold the pepper, which provided the added benefit that you can always see exactly how much salt or pepper is left in it. We designed our own custom grinding mechanism for maximum strength and efficiency and have made it using a premium injection moulded 95% alumina ceramic.
After countless tests and prototypes, we discovered a floating pawl ratchet mechanism connected to hubless discs and perpendicular handles was the most effective way to create maximum sustainable leverage. This design also gave us the perfect means to create the actuating force with one hand (by squeezing the handles together) as well as the range of motion to drive it with two hands for insane output. Timber handles and matte finished chrome-plated zinc provided the perfect finishing touches for Ortwo, making it beautiful but able to stand up to daily use in the kitchen.
After proving our design with the original Ortwo, we knew we needed to make a less expensive version for the masses. Ortwo Lite has all of the functionality of its predecessor, and uses the same unique grinding mechanism but it comes in at a more economic price point. We've swapped out the timber handles and zinc body for a sleek and strong reinforced nylon, and found SAN clear plastic to be the ideal choice for the spice container. It's all of the original Ortwo's pepper grinding might, just Lite.
Ortwo and Ortwo Lite are launching now but before the first units were even rolling off the production line, Ortwo had already won a Red Dot Design Award. And then the Australian Good Design Award. And then a Global Innovation Award, making it the most awarded pepper mill on the market. Ever. And did we mention they weren't available to buy yet?
So what do you do when you know you've created the world's best pepper mill before it has even hit stores? Simple. You crack open a beer. Or two."
